In the tanks at SEA LIFE Helsinki, you can see corals grown by Korallifarmi in Helsinki.

The goal of this collaboration is to highlight the magnificent diversity of corals and to demonstrate how small fragments can grow into spectacular coral colonies over time.

Why is local coral farming important?

Local coral farming supports sustainable practices in both SEA LIFE Helsinki's animal care and the entire marine aquarium industry. Corals grown in Finland do not need to be transported long distances from abroad, and the same coral strains can be propagated for years.

Coral colors and diversity

Thousands of coral species are known, occurring in many different forms and colors, from soft corals to stony species. Their coloration also varies with lighting. The picture shows corals grown at Korallifarmi under blue light, where their fluorescent pigments glow particularly strongly.

How are corals grown?

In addition to natural reproduction, new corals can be grown by cutting small pieces from a healthy coral colony and attaching them to growth substrates. Under suitable conditions, the cut surfaces heal quickly, and the small fragments begin to grow into new coral colonies.

Corals are not plants, although they often appear to be. They are animals that need the right light, water flow, and stable water conditions to grow.

The coral population in SEA LIFE Helsinki's tanks will be gradually replenished, so it's worth coming back later to see how the corals have grown! Visit SEA LIFE Helsinki
